Just the Goods Newsletter - June 2026 ... Summer begins! πΏ
Published about 1 month agoΒ β’Β 6 min read
Hello! π
I hope your week is off to a beautiful sunny start!
It's quite amazing ... Winnipeg went from ice rain to summer in the blink of an eye. Leaves appeared on trees about three weeks ago, then suddenly there was a full bloom of honeysuckle and lilac, chokecherry, and wild plum! The longer days are most welcome, and all our seedlings planted out into the garden seem quite happy πΏ
To start summer, this newsletter...
offers the return of a few seasonal favourites
asks a question
shares news about a series of community events taking place in Winnipeg
links to a savoury herbal recipe created and shared by a friend
provides advance notice about my week away in August
Please scroll down for details π
New Category: First Aid + Personal Care
As I continue to expand my knowledge of plants -- and while conducting experiments that may one day make it to Just The Goods' catalogue -- I've decided to create a new category on the website that gathers these items into one place so they're easier to find. Currently, this list includes...
atrophy relief balm
calendula salve
cooling arnica + menthol muscle balm
Ideas I'm developing include a warming muscle balm featuring ginger and/or chili peppers (both ingredients I'm hoping to grow in sufficient quantities this summer!). And, I'm also looking into creating a herbal steam blend to soothe the impact of smoke inhalation that can result from summer fires. I look forward to sharing further news if things work out as planned π

magnesium chloride flakes
Something I make for personal use is what's known as magnesium oil --- an aqueous solution featuring magnesium chloride dissolved into water. I use it to relax and soothe foot and leg muscles so I can fall asleep a little more easily at night, and I was surprised to learn this has become a trendy item online! I make my own magnesium oil with magnesium chloride, aloe vera juice, and a hint of lavender essential oil. I've noticed that other formulas contain arnica and peppermint and/or menthol, but those ingredients are already featured in my cooling muscle balm.
Question: Would you be interested in my magnesium oil formula? Is it something I should consider offering? And, if I did, would you prefer it to contain mint and/or lavender, or would you prefer it to be unscented?
Please let me know your thoughts by replying to this message π
Beyond that, I have an interesting stock of calendula salve made from conventionally purchased calendula oil. Earlier this year I was asked to undertake a special order of 25 jars of calendula salve. Prior to shipping, the client needed to cancel the order and requested that I hold it so they could re-submit payment in a few months. Sadly the client was no longer able to follow through with their order in the end; but, looking on the bright side, I now have 25 jars of calendula salve I'd love to offer you at 30% off the regular price so it can move out into the world and be enjoyed!
This invigorating and deodorizing foot scrub brings tired feet back to life after a long day. Finely ground apricot kernel shell provides effective exfoliation while aloe vera and vegetable glycerine provide moisturizing slip. Peppermint and tea tree essential oil stimulate while offering antibacterial support πΏβ¨ I'm so glad to have my preferred aloe vera gel back in stock to make this once more!

Just the Goods' "creamsicle" hand/body lotion
Back until the end of September, another gourmand scented, this time featuring the delicious interplay of vanilla and orange. Since this lotion uses only natural plant-based essential oils and absolutes, it has a warm scent with a touch of sweetness akin to real food ingredients rather than artificial candy notes. Like all other Just the Goods' scented lotions, this scent holds close to the body and doesn't project or linger so it provides comforting aromatherapy upon application, but is still appropriate to wear in environments where strong scents are discouraged π
Like Just the Goods' regularly available hand/body lotion, this variety is made from nourishing grapeseed oil, which is packed with antioxidants including vitamin E to reduce inflammation and supports the production of collagen making it an effective, fast absorbing, and long lasting moisturizer.
And, if you're in Canada, please take this as your sign to explore her complete range available here: https://urbanearthteas.ca/ There's so much to discover and enjoy, including a spotlight on which varieties can be enjoyed as refreshing iced tea!
Last Chance
This is a quick note to say that the last batch of rose shimmer lip balm is now available and I'm already starting to imagine what the next limited edition variety might be... Spruce tip? Or maybe basil and mandarin? β
I'm is delighted to contribute in a small way to Jody Unrau's presentation of a wonderful series of 90-minute outdoor wellness experiences rooted in movement, connection, and community all in support of the Health Sciences Centre's Eating Disorder Program!
All fitness levels are welcome to participate in one or all events, each of which include:
Strawberry season in Manitoba typically begins at the end of June. Fortunately many of our plants survived the winter (and hungry bunnies and voles!) so I'm hoping for an abundant harvest that I can turn into strawberry face mask! I know many of you have been asking when it will be back in stock... I will absolutely let you know the moment I've dehydrated enough to make it available π
New Perfumes
I'm working on a limited edition cedarwood perfume oil that's almost finished. And, as soon as my geraniums burst into their next growth phase, and once tomato leaves are abundant, I'm going to tincture both for further experiments in alcohol-based perfume sprays. Hopefully these leafy experiments are as delightfully verdant as I imagine... I'll keep you posted π
Something Extra
Nada's dandelion stem kimchi
My friend Nada recently started a Substack account to share her work as a herbalist, nutrition educator, and recipe writer. Her first issue features an exciting twist on a culinary staple: dandelion stem kimchi! It looks delicious, and I'm very excited about her future posts!
Click below to learn about the nutritional benefits of both kimchi and dandelion, and to explore this recipe!
Just the Goods is typically a 7 day/week operation, so I find it very helpful to take a week in the summer to catch up on rest and sunshine π This year, I'll be taking time away from Saturday, August 1 to Sunday, August 9.
All orders placed by July 26 will ship by July 31.
Orders placed July 27 - August 9 will be handmade for shipping starting on Monday, August 10 for shipping Friday, August 14.
Thank you so much!! π

Hello! π Since my last message wishing you "Happy Spring" -- and a few more snowfalls in Winnipeg -- I'm happy to say the grass is finally greening, skies are blue, and I'm truly delighted to see ravens, crows, and an eagle fly into the protection of trees with twigs or strands of tall grass in their beaks. I saw two pods of pelicans circling overhead this past weekend, and there's a great grey owl making itself heard every night! [A friend helped identify the owl by texting me a succession...
